There are some small splits and cracks, with losses to one hand in particular, and there is some minor old woodworm to the crucifix. The ivory displays are very rich and well established patina and the whole certainly is evocative of its vintage.

This carvings detail is of superior quality, the way the ribs are showing and the expression on Jesus' face are both deft and highly skilled.

Cross symbols predate Christianity, and ancient objects bearing crosses have been found in most parts of the world and the cross is the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith. It represents the death and resurrection of Jesus and serves as a reminder of our own sins and our need for redemption.
