One of the pilasters has its stylised leaf motif above the mask picked out in green still surviving, the other is lacking. There is old worm to the lengths in places but they are both still structurally solid. The lengths of the supports suggest they are originally from a fireplace surround, being the two opposing pilasters that would have supported the top shelf mantelpiece.

In the eighteenth century, the architects returned to the Inigo Jones classic type, but influenced by the French work of Louis XIV. and XV. Figure sculpture, generally represented by graceful figures on each side, which assisted to carry the shelf, was introduced, and the over-mantel developed into an elaborate frame for the family portrait over the chimneypiece. Towards the close of the eighteenth century the designs of the Adam Brothers superseded all others, and a century later they came again into fashion. The Adam mantels are in wood enriched with ornament, cast in molds, sometimes copied from the carved wood decoration of old times. Clodion worked mostly in terra-cotta, his preferred subject matter being nymphs, satyrs, bacchantes, and other Classical figures sensually portrayed. Clodion fused the movement and energy of the Baroque seventeenth century with antique themes in a lighter, more delicate and more subtly sensual style than previously achieved by contemporaries. He was also, with his brothers, a decorator of such objects as candelabra, clocks, and vases. Perhaps because of his apparent unwillingness to be seriously monumental, he was never admitted to the Royal Academy. Nevertheless, after the Revolution had driven him in 1792 to Nancy, where he lived until 1798, he was flexible enough to adapt himself to Neoclassical monumentality—the relief on the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, representing the entry of the French into Munich, is an example.

The bacchanalia were rites originally held in ancient Greece as the Dionysia and were wild and mystic festivals of the Greco-Roman god Bacchus (or Dionysus), the wine god. The term has since come to describe any form of drunken revelry. Putti like this are a classical motif found primarily on child sarcophagi of the 2nd century, where they are depicted fighting, dancing, participating in bacchic rites, and playing sports.

Quintessentially Rococo.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1000/5800/5784/files/main-image_a5a853f7-065f-4d53-a7d9-d286f0923e5c.jpg?v=1787571699
a-good-quality-19thc-figured-walnut-wall-mirror-agl40
A Good Quality 19thC Figured Walnut Wall Mirror

Origin: English
Period: Early / Mid Nineteenth Century
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1840
Height: 29.25 inches
Width: 22.5 inches
Depth: 2 inches (all with cornice)

The amply proportioned walnut veneered wall mirror having the original heavy plate mercury bevelled glass, the arch shaped reeded surround surmounted by a cornice.

Once having been the central section of a very large three-piece dressing mirror or wardrobe, the sides bear brass-locking plates to which other sections would have been attached. The top appears to be original and has a nice patina, though has at some stage, been in two pieces and repaired so there is a fissure line running through the whole. They would often be placed on either side of a pier table or positioned in front of mirrors so the candlelight could be reflected and multiplied in the glass Guéridon was the name of a Moorish slave at Louis XIV's court, so some historians believe that therefore candle-stands were termed guéridons, and retained the name even when the forms changed.

By the time of the death of Louis XIV there were several hundred of them at Versailles, and within a generation they had taken an infinity of forms: columns, tripods, termini and mythological figures. Silver, enamel, and indeed almost any material from which furniture can be made, have been used for their construction. Other theories include the objects being used as an early form of burglar alarm with the large surfaces reflecting intruders to ones attention. History tells us glass houses in England began producing witch balls in about 1690. In 16th century England the with ball was called a 'watch bottle' designed to contain holy water supporting the folk tale relating them to magic associated with them. The witches bottle was a stone or glass bottle filled with urine, nails or hair burned or heated for the purpose of repelling or breaking a witche's power over her victim. The facing interior of the drawer is slanted, and is almost trough like with its hugely thick sides which is a nice nod to the provincial feel of the piece.

Following the austere years of Puritan rule, the return of the Charles II from exile in Europe heralded a period of great luxury. On his return the King set about creating a court as dazzling as those of his Continental counterparts and as such the country was opened to Dutch and French influence with many highly-skilled furniture makers settling in England. Furniture remained heavy but with more carving and fine detail became fashionable, notably in the sculpture of Grinling Gibbons. Locally-grown oak was the basic wood for country pieces and carcasses but, by the end of the century, case furniture was often veneered with English walnut or walnut imported from France or Virginia.

Beautiful period English furniture with enough sculptural quality to make it able to sit in any setting.
Origin: Italian or French
Period: Late 19thC
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1870-1890
Height: 9.25”
Base Diameter: 3”

The dark patinated bronze portrait bust of Roman Emporer Lucius Verus (c. 180-183 AD) modeled as the emperor gazing sinister on a waisted socle and numbered '3738' to the rear, surviving from late nineteenth century France or Italy.

In good overall condition the bust has not had any restoration or cleaning taken to it with the darkness to the bronze creating the impression of Berlin iron. Born Lucius Ceionius Commodus, the same name of his father, he became Lucius Aelius Commodus when the latter was adopted by Hadrian, since both father and son had to change their names accordingly. Throughout Antoninus' reign he was to remain in the shadow of the emperor's favourite Marcus Aurelius, who was being groomed to hold office. If Marcus Aurelius was granted the office of consul at 18 years of age, he had to wait until he was 24.

Lucius Verus was tall and good-looking. Unlike emperors Hadrian, Antoninus and Marcus Aurelius, who had made wearing beards fashionable, Verus grew his to a length and breath of a 'barbarian'. He is said to have taken great pride in his hair and beard and at times even to have sprinkled gold dust on it in order to further enhance its blonde colour. He was an accomplished public speaker and also a poet and enjoyed the company of scholars. Though so too was he an ardent fan of chariot racing, publicly backing the 'Greens', the horse racing faction supported my the poor masses of Rome. Further he was also very interested in physical activities such as hunting, wrestling, athletics and gladiatorial combat.

Reminiscent of Grand Tour this is a fine sculpture of delicate proportions for such a giant of a man.
Origin: English or French
Period: Late 19thC
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1890-1900
Height: 34” or 16” at seat
Width: 30”
Depth: 32”

The comfortable and supple leather armchair with a flared shaped back the whole in chocolate brown leather having a button upholstered back and flanks, and gilled arms to tapering legs with ceramic castors surviving from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

The chair is in largely original order making it hugely appealing, with the upholstery just on the right side of distressed. The leather is worn but appealingly so, now wonderfully supple to the seat, with a handful of repairs to the whole, which we have stabilized, please see photographs for visual reference. There are some areas where the leather has worn down to the suede base level, mainly to the top left flank and the roll back. There are some tears to the sides, which have been repaired at some stage. The castors are also original to the piece but are a little stiff. It proves a very comfortable chair indeed, perfect for lounging, reading or watching.

This chair could be grouped with that of 'club' furniture from the early twentieth century. The word "club" in club chair harks back to the gentlemen's clubs in nineteenth century England where a gentleman could go to get away from his household (including womenfolk). Once there, he would sink into a well-upholstered leather chair and relax with a drink and perhaps a cigar. The names of the fashionable London streets full of such clubs are still used to name classic club chairs : St. James, Piccadilly and so on. A dictionary definition of a club chair or sofa is "A heavily upholstered piece of furniture with arms and a low back".

The shape of its back and arms means that this chair is in its own category, simply of a good country house armchair. The ebonisation of the frame is possibly later, carried out in the twentieth century.

By the mid-eighteenth century, facial hair fell dramatically from favour as the face of the polite gentleman was increasingly clean-shaven. The arrival of the newly-invented cast steel enabled razor-makers to produce ever sharper (and indeed blemish-free) blades, rendering shaving more comfortable, and razors more durable and capable of re-sharpening. Shaving the face evinced neatness and elegance, and notionally separated the gentleman from the unkempt yokel whilst shaving the head prepared it for the wearing of a wig – an expression of gentlemanliness, masculinity and taste.

The early nineteenth century saw the development of the famous Sheffield straight razor, which resembles the straight razors used today. At the time this shaving mirror was crafted there was also a boom in the world of shaving related cosmetics as many perfumers and chemists began to manufacture soaps and creams specifically designed to aid in the shaving process.
